Lawmakers in the Georgia House of Representatives pushed forward legislation to authorize a $1 billion tax refund payment to state residents as the state manages a significant budget surplus.
House Bill 112 passed unanimously, 175-0, on Thursday, setting up consideration in the state Senate before making it to Gov. Brian Kemp’s (R-GA) desk for approval.

“No one knows how to spend their money better than the ones who earned it,” state House Speaker Jon Burns, a Republican, said in a post on X. “That’s why the House voted unanimously to return over $1 billion back to Georgia taxpayers!
The bill would authorize tax refund payments to eligible Georgia taxpayers who filed income taxes for 2023 and 2024. The payments would be $250 for individual filers, $375 for heads of households, and $500 for joint tax filers.
Kemp celebrated the legislation’s passage, expressing his desire for the state Senate to take up the bipartisan legislation.

The legislation passed on crossover day, the last day for each chamber to pass bills to be considered by the other chamber, and will need to be passed by the state Senate by April 4 to get to Kemp’s desk for approval.
