Bad. No other word for it.

The Democrats have tried to rebound, but the latest NBC poll numbers show that the party is crashing.

Not only have Republicans retained higher levels of support and party identification than the Democrats (a phenomenon in and of itself) but the Democrats have fallen from 21% very positive approval to 7% now.

(That’s 20% positive, 27% total.)

That’s down from 16% in September 2024. To put that into context, the Dems had better numbers with Biden and Kamala than they do now.

The underlying issue is the same one that’s been haunting the Dems. The party has gone far leftward, then tried to course correct which leaves it without really representing anything. The public is tired of the Party of Drag Queen Story Hour, BLM and Hamas, but the Dems are not sure who they are without identity politics. When they try to moderate, their base turns on them, and moderation seems to involve the Democrats adopting shibboleths from what they Imagine conservatives to be, and so they start talking about small business, the middle class and religion, and maybe bring out a Never Trumper or two for show.

This infuriates their base, much as bringing out Cheney did during the election, without winning any actual points with anyone else.

All of this sets up some dubious Obamaesque figure with charisma and a message to rise to the top and redirect the party the way that Barry did after Kerry got pounded. But instead, all the party has gotten so far is Gov. Newsom’s used car salesman routine and Buttigieg and Kamala circling for the chance to alienate everyone all over again.

That’s how you get to 7%.
