Byron York advises allies to reduce tariffs for ‘positive reaction’ from Trump

Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York recommended that European allies to the United States reduce their tariffs to appease President Donald Trump.

Trump announced tariffs against 86 countries in total last week. A majority of these countries received them because they had their own tariffs against U.S. goods. The U.K. for example faced a 10% tariff on Saturday after it was already the recipient of the 25% tariff on foreign automobiles, one of its top exports.

“It’s going to be very important to see what the very first people who talk to the president, world leaders when they talk to the president, what they come away with,” York said on Fox News’s Fox & Friends. “Europe has been holding back. But it sounds to me like it would be a good idea if they reduced their tariffs. That could meet a very positive reaction from President Trump.

There appear to be many in line to be first as Trump administration officials claimed that some 50 countries signaled their willingness to negotiate. However, York also acknowledged Trump could be motivated to not strike a deal with allies, even as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit Trump Monday.

“I think the biggest goal of the president’s number of goals for this is to bring more manufacturing back into the United States. He talks all the time about all of the deals he has made with foreign companies to invest large amounts of money into the United States,” York said.

The Trump administration even went as far as imposing tariffs on countries that are largely uninhabited or imposed no tariffs on U.S. goods in order to prevent tariffed countries from shipping their goods from there and avoid the tax on their goods.
