Comedian Bill Maher trashed Democrats for backing a potential presidential bid from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who he said shouldn’t be at the top of the party’s ticket in 2028.
On his show Real Time With Bill Maher on Friday night, Maher was adamant that the “Squad” Democrat, who has been crisscrossing the country with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on a “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, should not be the party’s nominee for president in three years.
“It shouldn’t be her, it shouldn’t be her,” the comedian flatly stated.
The sentiment was echoed by Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), who was a guest on the show.
When asked whether she thought Ocasio-Cortez should be the Democratic Party‘s nominee in 2028, Smith said, “No,” before backtracking and adding that it wasn’t her job to make that decision.
“It’s not my job to pick who the candidate is,” the Minnesota senator said.
Maher also criticized Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez’s “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, which has included stops in Arizona, Iowa, Wisconsin, and California as the two try to breathe life into the party after a disastrous 2024.
He said the two Democrats were merely chasing “shiny objects” by seeking a large crowd turnout at their speeches.
“I feel like big crowds — again, these shiny objects that the Democrats chase — it’s not about the big crowds when you’re talking at a festival or wherever they are, because I think that Bernie showed up at Coachella,” Maher said.

The tour by Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez has been met with backlash from some in their own party, including Democratic strategist James Carville.
He suggested earlier this week that the pair should “split off” from the Democratic Party if they continue to criticize establishment figures like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) instead of focusing on attacking Republicans.
