Democrats say saving US manufacturing is ‘who we are’

President Donald Trump’s goal of protecting and saving U.S. manufacturing with tariffs, controversial on Capitol Hill and Wall Street, is a patriotic home run on Main Street America.

Republican, Democratic, and independent voters all agree that protecting industry is part of the American way and should be the job of the president.

In the latest Rasmussen Reports survey shared with Secrets, 73% agree that “if we do not protect our nation’s manufacturers, we lose a fundamental part of who we are as a people. Making things, building things, working with our hands is America’s heritage.”

Just 21% disagree, the pollster said. Among Republicans, it was 86% agree to 9% disagree. And among Democrats, the margin was 67%-21%. Independents were in the middle, 69% to 25%.

Rasmussen also asked voters if Washington does enough or too little to protect American manufacturing, and the results backed up Trump’s bid to help U.S. industry.

Overall, 45% of likely voters said the nation doesn’t do enough to protect manufacturing. Some 17% said the government does too much, and 25% said it does enough.

Trump’s tariffs have been divisive among business leaders and politicians, and he has received pushback from critics. The president, however, has said he does not plan to change his policies.

In Washington, most Democrats and a handful of Republicans have urged the White House to withdraw its tariffs, but polls like Rasmussen suggest that the policy is a winner so far.
