May Social Security direct payment goes out in 11 days

The Supplemental Security Income check for May will be sent to eligible recipients in 11 days, with the payments being worth up to $967 for individual filers.

On May 1, the Social Security Administration will issue SSI payments to eligible citizens in accordance with the agency’s mandate that these benefits be given to recipients by the first day of each month.

The program, run out of the Social Security Administration, gives payments to those with debilitating disabilities that may affect their income.

The amount that SSI checks are worth for beneficiaries depends on their status. Individuals receive monthly payments of $967, and eligible couples receive monthly payments of $1,450. Essential persons, who are people who live with someone receiving SSI and provide them with necessary care, receive monthly payments of $484 from the program.

The program’s requirement that recipients get their checks by the first of the month means that when the first day of a month falls on a weekend or a holiday, the Social Security Administration issues SSI checks the business day before.

Due to this rule, recipients will receive their payments earlier in three more instances this year. The payments for June, September, and November will be sent out earlier than the first of those respective months to ensure recipients receive their SSI payments by the start of those months.

The first SSI payments were sent to recipients by the Social Security Administration in January 1974. According to the SSA, payment rates have been adjusted in line with the cost of living since 1975. SSI checks differ from other payments sent by the Social Security Administration.

Regular Social Security payments, mainly for retirees, are issued on a different schedule each month from SSI payments and depend on the recipient’s birthday. Regular retirement checks are sent in three waves each month.
